The Medicare data matching bill - putting the privacy of Australians at risk

Summary:

Vanteum, along with an international consortium of data security and data privacy experts but together a submission as part of the Department of Health’s proposed Data matching bill that requires various government departments to share sensitive information on every Australian with Medicare with the intent of reducing fraudulent Medicare claims.

We believe the legislation, in its current form, will put the privacy of every Australian at risk – and unnecessarily so.

We are concerned that the legislation does not adequately address the protection of citizens personal information as it is predicated on both an out of date model of data exchange and out of date technology to enable this.

The consortium involved in our submission to the Department of Health includes Data privacy and security experts, including White House advisors, UN advisors and have advised a number of Government departments in the US including in the Intelligence and Defence communities on ways to safely and securely undertake such data collaborations that don’t put the privacy of citizens at risk.
